John Shepherd was a razor manufacturer (and victualler at The Brown Cow), who was listed in 1774 in Redcroft. In 1787, the address was Hollis Croft. In 1797, the enterprise was styled Shepherd & Sons. The trade mark was ‘WOLF’, below a crown (though ‘VV ROY PARDO HORIDA’ was part of the mark in the 1797 directory). In 1811, J. Shepherd & Sons was listed as a razor manufacturer at Hollis Croft; though by 1816, George Shepherd, razor manufacturer at Solly Street, had appeared in the Sheffield directory. Probably John (George’s father?) had died. The burial of John Shepherd, razor smith, at the parish church on 24 March 1811, may be relevant.
In 1821, George Shepherd was a horn merchant and razor manufacturer in Solly Street. He listed as a razor maker until 1833. By 1837, the business was no longer active and George was described as a ‘gent’, living at his residence, Moor Oaks. In 1839, John Barber was described as ‘successors to Mr George Shepherd’s trade of the genuine WOLF razors’. Barber’s continued to use the trade mark. George Shepherd, Moor Oaks, died on 20 December 1843, aged 81.
