William C. Eaton’s Melbourne Plate Works registered a silver mark in Sydney Street in 1883. It manufactured silver, electro-plated ware, and table cutlery. The owner had been born in Holbrook, Yorkshire, in 1848. He was the son of John and Harriett Eaton. In 1861, when the family was living in Sheffield, John Eaton was a letter carrier and shoe maker. His son became a silversmith manager, before establishing his enterprise in 1881. By 1887, the firm had moved to Howard Street. William C. Eaton, Thirwell Road, died on 19 March 1905, aged 56, and was buried in the General Cemetery. He left £715 to his widow, Annie Elizabeth. Eaton had been on the council of the Ancient Order of Foresters and featured (with a portrait) in its Delegate’s Guide to Sheffield & District (1903).
