In 1976, Sheffield-born Ronald James Carr (1945-2102) – a production engineer at Sheffield Smelting Co – began making jewellery. In 1977, during the Queen’s Silver Jubilee, he incorporated his business to make silver products and commemorative pieces. By the end of the 1980s, he had workforce of a hundred and in the following decade established a silver fabrication department. In 1994, Carrs began selling cutlery patterns and traditional silverware for export and for sale in concession shops in leading department stores (such as Harrods and Selfridges). In 2009, Carrs acquired the Osborne group (see Nickel Blanks). Ron Carr died on 7 June 2012, aged 67, and was cremated at Hutcliffe Wood. Carrs was located at Holbrook Industrial Estate, Mosborough, and later run by Carr’s sons: Richard, Martin, and Andrew (Nostalgic Memories of Sheffield, 2012).
