© Stanley Robert Jones (SCC Picture Sheffield [v03022]) - Derelict former premises of Jessop and Smith, cutlery forger and Alex Downing, Trafalgar Engineering Works
This firm was based in Trafalgar Street by 1922. Its advertisement displayed a wide range of cased canteens and boxed sets of table cutlery and carvers in Firth’s stainless and electro-plated nickel silver. The identity of the owner is uncertain – possibly he was from Doncaster. In 1925, Alexander Downing was listed as a manufacturing silversmith. The firm had been liquidated in the previous year. The premises were later occupied by Jessop & Smith, the name of which (and Downing’s) can be seen on the building’s exterior in an old photograph on PictureSheffield.
