Cutlery Box
Table cutlery produced by this firm was marked: ‘Estd 1793’. Wood is a common name, so tracking the family ancestry is difficult. Probably the enterprise had its roots in George Wood, table knife manufacturer, Exchange Works, Egerton Street, and George Wood & Co, fishing tackle dealer, Pinstone Street. These firms/individuals were active by 1900. George Wood & Sons was listed by the mid-1920s at Swiss Works, 108 Carver Street.
It specialised (probably as a factor) in stainless table knives, which were marked ‘FIRTH STAINLESS’ and sometimes had a bagpipes trade mark (also used by Ryalls, Turner & Co). In 1927, this cutlery (and fishing rod and tackle) manufacturer was dissolved. The partners were George Abraham Wood and Charles Arnold Wood (who withdrew) and William Samuel Staniforth, who continued trading. However, George Wood & Sons did not survive the 1920s.
