Frank Turton (1886-1979) was the son of William (a scissors grinder) and his wife, Elizabeth. Frank began making scissors in the interwar years at Solly Street. In 1948, Turton’s became private limited company (capital £2,000) at 72 Arundel Street (see W. & S. Butcher). Frank’s son, Victor (1919-1964), later became manager until his untimely death. Eric Stones, a previous employee, returned to run the firm; and Frank was also helped by his son-in-law, Basil Frith. The firm’s scissors, such as the Turton Pattern, were regarded as among the best in the trade. Frank was a leader in the hostelling movement and regularly walked 18 miles a day in his 70s. He continued working until he was 90. He died on 14 April 1979, aged 92, leaving £43,611. In 1983, Turton’s was dissolved.
