John Platts (c.1827-1875) was born in Sheffield, the son of Ecclesfield edge tool maker, John Platts. In 1850, John Platts Jun. married Anne Fayram (1830-1893) at Carver Street Chapel. By now, he was a scissors grinder. In 1860, he was listed as a scissors manufacturer at Union Wheel, with a residence in Watery Street. In 1862, he advertised as a fine scissors manufacturer. By 1868, he was living and working in Mitchell Street. He died there on 7 April 1875, aged 48, leaving under £2,000 to his widow, Anne. One of his sons, Joseph Fayram Platts, launched a cutlery enterprise with George Luther Wood at Mitchell Works, Mitchell Street. It was liquidated in 1877, with debts of £675.
