Samuel Pass established an ironmonger’s business at Coalpit Lane. He may have been the son of John Pass, a carrier in Sheffield, and his wife, Elizabeth. If so, he was baptised on 11 May 1785. Samuel’s traded especially in iron, steel, and wire, and by the 1820s he also described himself in directories as a table knife manufacturer and horn scale cutter. He operated his iron, steel, metal, and iron warehouse until his death on 30 July 1858, aged 73. Hus unconsecrated burial was at the General Cemetery. He left under £2,000. His son, Samuel, continued the business in partnership with George Buxton. At that time, Samuel claimed 16 years’ management experience (Sheffield Independent, 22 January 1859). When he died in 1899, however, Samuel was a furniture dealer.
