Richard Wood Marples (1907-1984) descended from a scissors-making family. He was living with his grandparents at Leavygreave in 1911. By the 1930s, when he was residing at Cardoness Road, he was a scissors and tinners’ shears putter-together. After the War, he started business as a manufacturer of scissors, tailors’ shears, and trade knives (such as putty and painters’ knives). Marples’ was located at Progress Works, Sudbury Street, The business advertised in The Ironmonger Diary in 1950 and 1952, though it had apparently ceased trading by the late 1950s. Richard W. Marples later lived at Hope, Derbyshire, and died on 19 September 1984, leaving about £40,000.
