Nathaniel Holden (1813-1874) was born in Sheffield on 24 March 1813, the son of Samuel (an optician) and his wife, Elizabeth. The Census (1841) enumerated him as a scissor smith, living in Smithfield with his wife, Eliza. In the 1840s, he worked for Steer & Webster. In the directory (1852), he was a spring knife manufacturer in Hammond Street, but when he was listed again in 1856 it was as a scissors manufacturer. He worked in Arthur Street – a road adjoining Addy Street, Crookesmoor, which has since been demolished. Intriguingly, in the directory (1868) his profession was described as scissors manufacturer and photographer. According to the Census (1871), Nathaniel remained in Arthur Street as a scissors manufacturer. He died at Finlay Street on 19 May 1874, aged 61. He left effects under £100 to Eliza, who purchased his grave plot in Burngreave Cemetery.
