In 1811, this firm was listed as a merchant and factor in Spital Hill. The partners – Jonathan and George Hobson – had worked with the Sorbys. Hobson’s warehouse was at the foot of Spital Hill, near the Wicker, and the enterprise was listed until 1818. Jonathan Hobson, a merchant, was bankrupt in 1817, and the Spital Hill business apparently ended. But other ‘Jonathan Hobsons’ were active at this time and the picture is confusing. Jonathan Hobson died at Broomhill on 18 August 1829, aged 75 (Sheffield Independent, 22 August 1829), but no information is presently available on his identity.
