Frederick Henry Hattersley was born on 17 August 1839 in Catcliffe, Yorkshire. He was the son of John Hattersley (1796-1853), a farmer, and his wife Mary née Froggatt (1806-1875). In 1858, Frederick married Elizabeth née Wilkinson (1840-1882) and they had ten children. By 1871, Frederick was listed as a fine scissors manufacturer in Eldon Street. He brought his sons into the business, which by 1880 was listed at Empress Works, Eldon Street and Trafalgar Lane. According to the Census, Frederick employed 13 men (though the figure is difficult to read on the Census page). In 1896, Empress Works was offered for sale. The firm was listed at Cumberland Street and then Jessop Street at the start of the twentieth century, with Frederick living at Totley Rise. It was not listed in 1911. Frederick apparently died in 1926, aged 86. One son, John Hattersley, operated his own business.
