In the late 1860s, Charles Henry Hattersley (1844-1915) began as a maker of breech-loading implements. After a partnership with John Bartram Falding ended in 1889, he became a silversmith and electro-plate manufacturer. He registered a silver mark in 1892 and was based at Snider Works, Napier Street (then Matilda Street after 1896). Hattersley was a well-known, too, as a church bell ringer. He died at Dover Street on 21 October 1915, leaving £4,719, and was buried at Ecclesall. His sons, Harry (1879-1960) and Lawrence (1881-1939), continued as manufacturing silversmiths.
