This scissors smith was the grandson of Thomas Gray, who had worked in Pitsmoor as one of the first fine scissors makers in the town. Clement himself was the eldest son of Thomas Gray, Upperthorpe, who worked in the fine scissors trade for sixty years. In directories, Thomas was at Pyebank (1845); Fitzwilliam Street (1849); Bath Street (1860); and Allen Street (1868-76). He employed two girls and two boys in 1871. Clement was in Duncombe Street in 1879 (also Thomas’s address). Clement was working in Allen Street (and living in Wadsley Lane, Hillsborough), when he died, aged 61, on 9 May 1911. His funeral was at Walkley Cemetery. Obituarists described him as ‘one of the cleverest workers in the trade, being a specialist with the file’. He left £190. The enterprise ceased trading after his death.
