Joseph Stringer (1873-1936), scissors manufacturer, was born in Stannington, the son of Samuel (a razor-scale presser) and Louise. Joseph moved with his wife, Florence, to Halifax, where he repaired and ground cutlery. His sons, Joseph Victor (1899-1942) and Willie (1904-1975), were born in Halifax. Joseph Stringer & Sons, scissors manufacturer in Holly Lane, appeared in a Sheffield directory by the mid-1920s. Joseph, of Louth Road, died on 29 February 1936, leaving £607 (Florence died in 1953, leaving £1,886). His sons continued the business at Eclipse Works, Boston Street (1937) and Monmouth Street (1939). After the war, the address was 68 Headford Street. Joseph Victor withdrew from the partnership in 1962 (he lived at Bingham Crescent and died at The Royal Infirmary on 17 October 1962, leaving £10,563). Willie continued the business, until it was acquired by George Platts & Son in 1968.
