Elias Longley (1810-1875) and William Longley (1814-1889) were the sons of William Longley, a scissors smith in Watery Lane in 1841, and his wife Elizabeth. By 1849, Elias was a scissors maker in Yard 24, Carver Lane. In 1854, he was listed in Backfields. He launched a partnership with his brother William, but in 1856 this was dissolved. William advertised in 1861 as a manufacturer of plain and fancy scissors in Allen Street. He was aged 46 and employed three men and a boy. William became involved with Longley & Hawksworth. Elias continued alone. By 1871 – when he was a scissors and tailor’s shears manufacturer in Lambert Street and living in Hoole Street, Walkley – he employed 14 men and six women. Elias died on 12 December 1875, aged 65, and was buried in Burngreave cemetery. Elias’s son was Ellis Longley.
