George Garlick was born in Sheffield on 10 September 1842, the son of John Garlick, a shoemaker in Upper Allen Street, and his wife, Mary neé Wilkinson. The latter was the daughter of a silver-plater. In the Census (1861), George was enumerated as a silversmith. He began business with William Mammatt, but their partnership was dissolved in 1864. George Garlick & Co was launched as an electro-plate manufacturer in Eyre Street, but was bankrupt in 1867. Garlick then worked as a silversmith manager and commercial traveller. Apparently, in his later years he worked for William Briggs & Co. He lived in Talbot Gardens, Park, and attended and supported the local Methodist Chapel. He died at 14 Talbot Gardens on 27 June 1898, aged 55, and was buried in City Road Cemetery.
