This scissors manufacturer in Allen Street only appeared in two Sheffield directories: 1849 and 1852. The partners were Edwin (1809-1873) and Thomas (1811-1882). They were the sons of Thomas Colley and his wife, Mary Trickett. Thomas Jun. had been born at Huddersfield. Thomas Sen. was probably the scissors manufacturer and chaser listed in Allen Street in 1833 (he lived in adjacent Burnt Tree Lane). Thomas Sen. and his sons were in business together by the late 1830s, but filed for insolvency at the end of the decade (Sheffield Independent, 8 June 1839). In the Census (1841), Thomas Sen. and his family (including Edwin) were in Shepherd Street. Thomas Jun. was living in Dunfields. They were still working as scissors makers.
After Colley Bros ended in about 1852, Edwin continued as a scissors manufacturer and was also briefly landlord at the Cup in Dun Street. After the 1850s, he was no longer listed as a manufacturer in directories, though he continued as a scissorsmith. His brother, Thomas, remained a scissors manufacturer at Allen Street, though in 1871 the Census recorded that he was making saucepans. Edwin died at New Thomas Street on 21 December 1873, aged 64. He was buried at Burngreave in the same grave as his wife, Elizabeth, who had died in 1869. Thomas Jun. died at 72 Allen Street on 13 December 1882 (aged 71) and was buried at Wardsend cemetery. The brothers’ parents may have been buried at St Philip’s churchyard: Thomas in 1848 (aged 64) and Mary (aged 69) in 1854.
