In 1774, John and Samuel Henfrey had been listed in Spring Street as makers of snuffers, pen stands, and steel toys. In 1775, they were amongst the first silver platers to register a mark at the Assay Office. Bailey’s Northern Directory (1781) listed Samuel alone in Spring Street, where he also made scissors. His identity and relationship with other Henfreys are uncertain, though he may have been the Samuel Henfrey, who became a Freeman in 1763. St Paul’s register recorded the burial of a Samuel Henfrey on 13 May 1783, though did not provide further details.
