Joseph Cutts and his wife...">
Charles Cutts, who was born in Sheffield on 24 June 1825, was the son of Joseph Cutts and his wife, Elizabeth. In summer 1854, he advertised as a manufacturer of patented electro-silver plated and Britannia metal tea and coffee services at Howard Lane Works. In 1855, he moved to Atlantic Works, St Philip’s Road, which had been vacated by Thomas Wigfall. Two years later Cutts’ business was liquidated (Sheffield Independent, 15 August 1857). Apparently, in 1868 he was imprisoned for embezzling from his next employer, William Howe & Co. After his wife deserted him, on 16 August 1868 he cut his throat at his lodging in Yarmouth, where he was working as a traveller in plated goods (Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 4 January 1868; Ipswich Journal, 22 August 1868).
