In 1833, Joseph Burgin (c.1798-1851) was listed as a scissors manufacturer, living in West Street. By 1839, he had formed Burgin & Broadhead with John Broadhead (see Broadhead, Hall) in West Street. This ended in 1842. A subsequent partnership at the same address with Charles Ward ceased in 1849. Burgin was enumerated in the Census (1851) as a scissors manufacturer, living with his wife Ann and a single apprentice. However, he died on 22 December 1851, aged 63, from ‘inflammation of the lungs’ (General Cemetery register). His widow, Ann, died in 1868, aged 78, and was buried in Pitsmoor.
