The Hawksworths made pen and pocket knives in Attercliffe. Thomas and Jonathan Hawksworth were listed in directories in 1774 and 1787. The trade marks were ‘SX’ and ‘CASAN’. John Hawksworth (c. 1752-1837) was probably the son of Thomas, who was granted his Freedom by the Company of Cutlers in 1785. Apparently, he was later an Assistant in the Company. He appeared in directories between 1797 and 1829 and apparently had workshops next to Travellers’ Inn (see Thomas Miller). By 1833, he was listed as a ‘gentleman’. He died on 8 January 1837, aged 74, and was buried in Christ Church graveyard, Attercliffe. Thomas Hawksworth – possibly John’s father – had been buried in Attercliffe on 25 March 1818, aged 90.
