Born in about 1842 – probably in Hill Top – John Edward Gregory was the son of John and Anne Gregory. His father was a spring knife cutler. Eventually, John Edward became a spring knife manufacturer: first in Montague Street in the 1870s; and then by the early 1880s at Smith’s Wheel, Sidney Street. John E. Gregory, Ratcliffe Road, Sharrow Vale, died on 13 February 1910, aged 68, and was buried in Ecclesall. His nephew, Walter, continued as a spring knife manufacturer at Smith’s Wheel.
