Charles Gamble (c.1819-1881) was the son of James Gamble (1793-1865), a table blade forger, and his wife, Hannah Oxley (1792-1864). Charles followed his father’s trade and by the late 1860s was in Button Lane forging steel blades for plated desserts and fish carvers. In 1871, he operated from Clarence Street on the Ecclesall Road. He was buried on 2 January 1882, aged 62, in an unconsecrated grave at City Road Cemetery. His widow, Mary Ann, was buried in the same grave in December that year.
