This cutler was born in Sheffield in about 1820. In the Census (1851), he was enumerated in Mitchell Street as a cutlery manufacturer, employing four men and a boy. Living with Joseph and his wife Mary was an apprentice, William Unwin. Apparently, Joseph worked at Wingfield, Rowbotham. Joseph Foulstone appeared in the local directory in 1856 as a spring knife manufacturer in Siddall Street. But he was not apparently listed thereafter, though he continued to trade as a spring-knife maker. Joseph’s wife, Mary, died in 1882 (aged 62); Joseph, ‘manufacturer’, Sidney Street, died on 5 January 1890 (aged 70). Their remains lie in an unconsecrated grave in the General Cemetery.
