The first appearance of William Evans (c.1800-1869) in a directory was in 1833, when he was listed as a table knife manufacturer and stag and buck scale cutter, 7 Smith’s Square, Bailey Lane. He partnered George Alexander Stevens (unidentified) as a table knife manufacturer, but this was dissolved in 1834 and it was never listed in a directory. Evans married Mary Ann Glossop in 1836. By the late 1830s, he was a table knife manufacturer and general dealer in Sheffield hardware at Bowden Street and Milton Works, Milton Street. He later added varnish dealer to his trade description. During the 1840s, he was listed as a spring-knife manufacturer at Ecclesall Bazaar. In the 1850s and 1860s, he was variously a warehouseman, table knife cutler, and table knife manager. He died ‘suddenly’ at his residence 114 Broomhall Street on 11 December 1869, aged 69. According to his brief obituary, he was a bookseller, stationer, formerly of Milton Works, Bowden Street. He was buried in the consecrated section of the General Cemetery, in the same grave as the remains of his wife, Mary Ann, who predeceased him on 26 March 1847, aged 47.
