Born in Sheffield on 4 December 1829, Jonathan Brookes was the son Jonathan Brookes (c.1803-19 December 1878) and Gertrude née Kent. His father was a cutler. His brother was John Brookes, of Brookes & Crookes. Both Jonathan and John specialised in the manufacture of dressing case instruments. In 1871, Jonathan was briefly listed in the Sheffield directory as associated with Brookes & Crookes. He worked in his chosen trade until at least 1901, when he was living with his wife Eliza Jane née Darwent in Crookesmoor Road. He died there on 27 June 1911, aged 81, leaving £1,904.
