James and Daniel Brown were apparently brothers – the sons of Thomas Brown, a table blade forger, and his wife, Mary Ann. In 1871, they advertised as manufacturers of trade knives and table cutlery at Central Works, West Street. John Nicholson issued a public apology for defaming their business (Sheffield Independent, 14 May 1872). The Browns ended their partnership later in 1872 and soon went into individual liquidation. James apparently continued to manufacture butchers’, shoe, and palette knives in Furnival Street (1876) and Pool Works, Burgess Street (1879), but his later life is untraced. Daniel worked as a butchers’ blade forger until at least 1911. He died in 1924, aged 82.
