In 1951, J. T. Epworth & Son Ltd was listed at Portland Works, 55 Arundel Street and Progress Works, Sudbury Street. The enterprise had family links with Joseph Epworth, a spring knife manufacturer. According to a descendant (Richard Epworth, 2011), Joseph Tom Epworth (1885-1965) – who had no involvement in cutlery – financed his son William Edward Epworth (1917-1974) in the launch of the firm in 1946. It manufactured stainless and electro-plated table cutlery and cased goods. William operated Epworth’s with Larry Fulton. However, the name ‘J. T. Epworth’ had appeared earlier in the family’s history. Richard Epworth has suggested that the name may be a compression of the names of two brothers, Joseph and Tom. J. T. Epworth & Son Ltd was insolvent by 1956 and was wound up two years later.
