Samuel Holmes (1819-1898), a spring knife cutler, was probably the son of Joseph (a cutler) and his wife, Hannah. Samuel was trading in Watery Street by 1871. He was joined by sons Isaac Armitage (1843-1912), Samuel (1851-1910), and Herbert (1853-1913). They were based at Central Works, West Street, and advertised spring, table, tradesmen’s knives, and scissors. In 1881, Samuel employed six workers. On his way to work early Saturday morning on 10 December 1898, he was buffeted by strong winds as he walked down Shaw Lane to the Manchester Road and collapsed from heart failure (Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 12 December 1898). He was aged 79. Isaac and Herbert moved the business to Trippet Lane. The firm ended with their deaths.
