This firm was registered in 1918 (capital £3,000) by Frank Smith, Fred Smith, and William Sykes at Bower Spring Works. It manufactured hand-forged scissors and shears, besides ‘knives and cutlery of every description’. By 1925, the manager and director was Ernest Day (1880-1956), who was also the owner of W. J. Ramsbottom. During the Second World War, the address became Esesco Works, Gibraltar Street. Photographs on picturesheffield.com indicate that the firm was in Copper Street, adjoining Gibraltar Street. Ernest Day, 33 Carsick Hill Road, died on 2 April 1956, leaving £5,141 to his widow, Lily. Thereafter, the company concentrated on tinmen’s shears and other cutting tools. Its marks included: ‘ESESCO’, ‘CUTCIT’, ‘EZECUT’, and ‘CUTVIT’. In 2013, Sheffield Shears Co Ltd continued to trade from a Nottingham address.
