We think this is probably William Charles Nodder born in Sheffield in 1872, the son of William Charles Nodder, a table knife cutler and Ann Nodder. The only records of the business were in Sheffield directories dated 1944/48 i.e. 'Nodder Wm & Co. cutlers, (butchers', bread, shoe, cooks' ham slices &c.), 20 Cambridge Street. T. N. 25835'.
William's father died in 1879 shortly after the birth of his youngest daughter, Annie. His widow, Ann worked as a table knife wiper to support her young family.
William (Jnr) was married and widowed twice, firstly to Eliza Hill (married 1890 – died 1894), secondly Annie Eliza Hurt (married 1896 – died 1937) and had three daughters. By the 1939, pre-World War II survey, William, a table knife cutler, was living with his brother-in-law Fred Baines, also a table knife cutler at 38 Parsonage Crescent, Walkley. William died in 1954, aged 82, at the City General Hospital and was buried in the same plot as Annie Eliza at Crookes Cemetery.
