Joseph Godwin (1873-1948) was the son of William (a clogger) and wife, Mary Ann. In the Census (1891), he was living in Allen Street, with his widowed mother. Joseph was a table knife cutler. He married and later lived at John Street, when he was ‘table knife cutler … worker’ (Census 1911). In the Register Of England & Wales (1939), he was a table knife cutler, residing at 23 Steade Road. He died there on 29 February 1948, aged 75. According to the burial register of City Road Cemetery, he had retired. Probate was granted to his son, Joseph Henry Godwin, table knife cutler. His effects were valued at £332.
