Albert Birtles (1881-1959) was the son of Isaac Birtles and his wife, Jane. When Albert was born, Isaac was a table knife cutler and the family lived in Harwood Street. In 1911, Albert was an assistant manager at an electro-plate works. In the early 1920s, Albert started his own business as a cutlery manufacturer. In 1925, he was listed at 28 Cambridge Street, from where he marketed table cutlery (including knives marked ‘Firth Brearley Stainless’). He continued to trade until the early 1950s, when his listed address (1951) was Meadow Head. He died on 30 May 1959, aged 78, leaving £1,219.
