Robert Stevenson (1862-1947) was born in Sheffield, the son of John and Sarah Stevenson. John was the owner of J. & J. Stevenson (a well-known comb manufacturer in Arundel Street).
By 1881, Robert was a clerk to an electro-plate manufacturer. His next job was apparently as a steel tool maker, but in 1894 he registered a silver mark (R.S & Co) at the Sheffield Assay Office. Stevenson’s address was 102 Charles Street, where he was listed as a cutlery and plate manufacturer. By 1901, it appears he had abandoned this venture, because the local directory listed him as a partner at T. W. Eaton (an electro-plater). Stevenson may have been one of the trustees appointed to run this venture.
In 1911, Stevenson was still listed at Eaton’s, though his involvement seems to have lapsed by the end of the First World War. His wife, Agnes Beatrice, died on 18 May 1938. Robert apparently died at Middlewood Hospital on 22 March 1947, aged 84. He left £915.
