Sheffield Stainless Cutlery Co Ltd was registered in 1920 with £2,000 capital as a gold, silver, and coppersmiths, brass founders, manufacturers and dealers in silver and electro-plate and cutlery of all kinds. The governing director was Herbert Dodsley Webster (1878-1940), who was the son of Joseph Webster (a traveller in steel and files) and his wife, Eleanor. The subscribers included Herbert’s sisters, Miss Harriett M. Webster and Miss Eleanor G. Webster, who both lived with their mother at Ardendale, Dore Road (Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 7 October 1920).
The enterprise was not a manufacturer, but a merchant and factor at Telegraph Buildings in High Street. In the following year, the firm was fined £10 for refusing to allow a commercial traveller to inspect its list of members and for failing to supply a copy of the list (Sheffield Daily Independent, 26 April 1921).
Sheffield Stainless Cutlery Co Ltd was not listed in the local directory in 1921; and was apparently struck off the register in 1934. Herbert D. Webster was a steel factor at his death in 1940.
