Stainless cutlery marked ‘Sheffield Cutlery Co’ was marketed in the 1920s. The Hawley Collection at Kelham Island has a ‘Firth Stainless’ table knife so marked. It may have been sold by The Sheffield Cutlery Co, Lower Hillgate, Stockport. In 1925, this retailer advertised ‘sales’ of stainless cutlery in the Stockport newspapers: namely, cutlery canteens, dessert knives, dessert spoons and forks, and cabinets of fish eaters (Stockport County Borough Express, 12 February, 3 December 1925). The advertisements only appeared in 1925 and presumably the retailer ceased trading. No information has been found on the owners. Interestingly, London & Sheffield Cutlery Co Ltd had been registered in 1921 by London subscribers, with £500 capital (Sheffield Independent, 24 November 1921). This was struck off in 1949. But it is not known whether it was linked with the Stockport retailer.
