Payne Ward (1864 – 1938) was born in Yorkshire, the son of John Ward and Sara Ann. The 1871 census enumerated the family living at Thomas Street Court 1, Ecclesall. John was working as 'a razor setter in' (fitting blades to cut-throat razors)). By 1881 the family had moved to 73 Chester Street and Payne, now 17 was also employed as a 'a razor setter in'. Four years later Payne married Eliza Beet, they had two children, Harry Payne Ward and Annie Jepson Ward prior to Eliza's death in 1889. Payne continued to work as a razor setter; he married Mary Ann Revitt in 1893 and had three further children, Payne Harry Ward, Colin Fortescue Ward, and Ida May Ward. The family moved to 62 Penryn Road where Colin F. had become an apprentice cabinet maker (1911 census).
Sheffield directories after 1911 included entries for both Payne Ward and his son Colin :-
1925, Colin F. Ward, cutlery mfr, (P. W. & Son), no address given.
1926, Ward Payne & Son, cutlery mfr, 56 Howard Street.
1932 to 1934, Ward Payne, cutler, merchant dealer, 101 Charles Street and finally
1934, Directory of Engineering Hardware and Metal Trades gave a more comprehensive listi.e. 'cutlery manufacture, kitchen knives, table knives, razor mfr, bread saw mfr, stainless cutlery and a wholesale cutler', also at Charles Street.
Ward Payne died in 1938, aged 74 and was buried at Underbank Chapel cemetery, Stannington. The 1939 register taken the following year showed Colin to be living with his mother at Graves Trust Homes, Beaumont Road, his occupation a cutler.
Colin died in 1972, aged 76, while living at 468 Park Grange Mount, East Bank, probate value £3403. Colin appears not to have married and no evidence has been found that the business continued after his death. His brother Harry Payne Ward traded as a cutlery manufacturer at 48 Porter Street around 1923 and a Mrs H. Payne (possibly Harry's wife) was trading as a cutlery dealer 1942/44/48 at Stall 37, Sheffield Market Hall.
