The name on this table knife does not match any known Sheffield cutlery manufacturer. So it was likely made in Sheffield for a distant retailer. A good candidate would appear to be G. Duncan & Son in the coastal town of Stonehaven in Scotland. George Duncan (1867-1934) had established a bakery, confectionery, and tea rooms at 37 Allardice Street. His shop was said to be “literally crowded with toothsome creations of the baker’s art arranged so invitingly that the temptation to sample every kind of bun and cake is almost overwhelming’ (Mearns Leader, 18 December 1914).
If this table knife was made for Duncan’s tea rooms, then it would have been made in the 1920s, when the business was ‘& Son’ (by the early 1930s it was styled ‘& Sons’). George Duncan – a well-known local figure, town councillor, and freemason – died at Allardice Street on 10 August 1934 (Mearns Leader, 16 August 1934). The business passed to his sons, William and George.
