Burland, Ellis & Co, a cutlery manufacturer, was active by the 1930s. The chief partner was Francis Thomas Burland (1900-1985), who was born at Barnsley. He was the son of Thomas Arthur Burland, a drayman and later insurance agent, and his wife, Lydia. In the Census (1939), Francis Thomas Burland was enumerated as a cutlery manufacturer, living at Springvale Road.
Burland, Ellis & Co was located at Pitt Street and during the Second World War was listed as cutlery manufacturer (‘export and wholesale only’). The firm was at Pitt Street through the 1950s and 1960s, but was not listed in 1974. Presumably, it had ceased trading.
Francis Thomas Burland, Flat 4, 34 Millhouses Lane, died on 25 March 1985, aged 84. He left £40,000. Information on the other partner, Ellis, has so far not been traced.
