Advertisement from Foreign Buyers' Catalogue 1895
Foreign Buyers’ Catalogue (1895) carried an advertisement for W.H. Robinson, manufacturer of table, dessert, and toy knives, Continental Works, Headford Street. Identifying the owner is difficult – as more than one W. H. Robinson was active at this time – however, it was probably William Henry Robinson. He had been born in 1861 at Weedon Bec, Northampton, and was the son of Henry Robinson (a grocer in Sheffield by 1871) and his wife, Emma.
By 1881, W. H. Robinson was a silversmith, living in Pitt Street. By the early 1890s, he was a table knife manufacturer in Eldon Street before apparently moving to Headford Street.
Robinson was listed in Egerton Street in 1901, with a similar product range, including ‘cheap lines for factors’. He was now associated with table knife manufacturer George Greenwell & Co, which was defunct by 1911. In that year, Robinson was living at 49 Bower Road and in the Census was enumerated as a table cutlery manager. He may have died in 1925.
