Jared Yates (1786-1842) was baptised at Masbrough Independent (Congregational) Chapel, the son of Samuel, a bookkeeper, and his wife, Mary. Jared (the name would be variously spelled in written sources – sometimes even as Gerard) was apprenticed to knife maker Joseph Yates in 1801 (though Jared did not take out his Freedom until 1840).
