William Ryals (sometimes spelled as Ryalls) was listed in 1822 as a pen and pocket knife maker at Tapton Hill. By the 1850s, he was combining spring knife manufacture with cow keeping. In the Census (1861), when he enumerated at Tapton Hill as a cutler and farmer of ten acres. William Ryals, Crosspool, Tapton, died on 16 April 1878, aged 85.
