Born in Chesterfield in about 1821, John Neal had moved to Sheffield by 1851 to work as a horn cutter and presser. He lived in Jessop Street. By 1861, his workshops in Wellington Street employed 16 men and three boys; by 1871, the workforce was 20 men and three boys. He lived in Broomspring Lane, but once he had prospered as a horn merchant he moved to Northumberland Road. Neal was a Methodist Reform local preacher and a town councillor.
