Edward Newton (1822-1877) was the son of John (a grocer) and his wife, Mary. By 1851, he partnered John J. Hutton (with whom Newton had family links) as a manufacturer of sickles and scythes at Ridgeway, Derbyshire. In 1851, Newton told the Census that they employed 63 men and 15 boys.
