Albert Milns was born in about 1858 at Thorpe Hesley, near Sheffield. He was the son of James Milns, a tailor, and his wife, Ann. Albert became a cutlery clerk and later hardware merchant. In 1901, he was a partner and director in H. G. Long & Co Ltd. In 1906, he launched a company in his own name at Stanley Works, Arundel Street.
