Samuel Smith Middleton (1817-1878) was born in Sheffield, the son of Joseph (a silver plater) and Ann. By 1841, he was a razor maker, living in Matilda Street. He was listed in the 1840s in Charles Street as a dealer in cutlery, cabinet case maker, and seller of razors and razor strops. In 1851, he worked in Eyre Street (‘partly employing 25 men’) and lived at Osborne Cottage, Button Hill.
