Mary Milner appeared in directories between 1833 and 1845 as a pen knife manufacturer in Balm Green, off Barker’s Pool. The Census (1841) enumerated her in Balm Green, living with three sons – John (b. 1823), Alfred (b. 1824), and William (b. 1826) – who were cutlers. No profession was listed for Mary. She was apparently the widow of John Milner, pen knife manufacturer, in Balm Green, who was listed in 1825. Presumably, she kept the Milner name alive until her sons came of age. ....
