Edward Kay was apparently baptised in Sheffield on 14 July 1801, the son of John (a cutler) and Ann. In 1828, he married Mary Elizabeth, the only daughter of William Birt, a publican at Grimesthorpe. Edward Kay was listed in 1833 as an ironmonger and cutler at West Street. In the late 1830s, Edward became an American hardware agent, resident in Sheffield at Hanover Street.
