This spring knife business can be traced to George Bishop, who worked in Steelhouse Lane. He was buried in St Philip’s churchyard on 8 March 1858, aged 56. George France became his ‘successor’ and in 1859 advertised as a maker of all types of spring knives from Roebuck Works, Love Street. In the following year, the directory gave France’s address as Steelhouse Lane. His identity is uncertain, but he may have been the George France, who died in Artisan Street on 23 August ....
